Save Our Sky Home-Heating Cooperative

The Save Our Sky Home-Heating Cooperative is an organization that believes that corn, when harvested sustainably, can be used as a climate-friendly fuel source. It consists of about 70 DC-area households which purchase and store corn in an urban grain bin to make it more convenient and affordable to burn corn as a primary heating source. These families greatly reduce how much global warming CO2 they produce, in addition to saving a couple hundred dollars per year.

Energy and Money Saving Tips for this Winter

Each winter, The Alliance to Save Energy publishes energy costs by state, along with tips to save energy and money. Their report for Maryland indicates that the average energy bills this season for homes heated with natural gas will increase by about $100. If you heat with oil, your increase will be about $335. Electric heating costs are expected to rise a mere $30. Since 45% of a typical yearly energy bill goes to heating your house, their tips can be money in the bank.
